A little over a month ago I decided it was time to say goodbye to my beloved pixie and try to grow my hair out. All over the web I've seen girls with these long box braids also known as poetic justic braids and I decided to give them a try.
I haven't had braids since I was little and I've never had them this long, but I was determined to get them exactly how I wanted them, long full and fabulous! After searching around I finally found a lady who would do them for under 200(it was 180). Please take note that these braid are down to my but, and I had probably about an inch and a half of hair. Also I wanted them to look very nice and I wasn't going to cheap out on myself.
I bought 14 pack of braiding hair, so that already tells you that these things are heavy, and headed to my stylist place. Fast forward 11 hours we were done and it was love at first sight! I honestly understand how mothers feel looking at their baby's for the first time , all that hard work and effort paid off I had became the nubian queen I envisioned. The first two days it was painful I hadn't had hair, hair in 5 years so me going to an inches or hair to 24 inches was dramatic. I have to say the worst part of it was when I tried to shower, I'm not a huge fan of getting my hair wet and trying to get it in that cute bun I saw everywhere was a JOB!
I had to flip my hair all the way over attempt to put it in a ponytail then wrap it around, the result was this big amazing messy bun. But besides that everything I love these braids. On the 18th it'll be a month and my hair has grown like weeds, I already had 3 braids fall out because of my hair being so short and I'm not ready to part with them yet. I think this will probably be my new thing until winter, then I may get a sew in or something like that. But back to the braids, let me give you the pro's and the cons.
Pro's:
- Very Very low maintenance
- They look amazing!
- And it helps preserve the length you have and protects the hair for external damage. Note I said preserve the length not make your hair grow, because it doesn't. Braid are simply protecting the hair that you have and it's easier to see where your hair has already grown but in no way does it make it grow.
Con's:
- If your hair is short you can expect one or two braids to fall out within those first couple of weeks because the hair doesn't have anything to really hold on to when the hair starts to grow.
- They are heavy the first few days
- And it can be more difficult to sleep and shower.
If you're planning on getting braids here's some tips
Don't get a relaxer or flat iron your hair before you get it done, have a decent amount of new growth so your hair is kinky enough to hold the braid.
Deep condition a at least 3 days to a week before so your hair stays hydrated this also prevents your hair from breaking off when you take them out.
Do research. I looked EVERYWHERE before I got a stylist thoroughly look through their photos and ask people that you know get braids where they got them done.
Quality over price, and I stress this. You're not going to get a good steak on a McDonald's budget. When we were finally finished my braids I expected to be out the door but she went through and dipped them twice to seal the ends, trimmed any excess hair that was on the braids even them out and everything! Remember you get what you pay for, me paying a little more got me better quality braids, that still look amazing after a month. Treat yourself!
