How To Create A Capsule Wardrobe

I've always had a passion for shopping. The rush of a sale, the thrill of swiping my card, and walking out with a multitude of goodies and trinkets I couldn't wait to wear. Even though I was too thrilled to purchase them,  my excitement wore thin once I got them home. I have clothes in my closet that I haven't even worn. Matter of fact, I can say 50% or more of my wardrobe I haven't worn more than a couple of times. I enjoyed looking at the colors, and having a closet full of clothes so I held on to them. But that's all I had, a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear and shopping more wasn't solving the problem. Something had to be done.

I've always enjoyed the minimalist look and lifestyle. Live more buy less. Not only is it a great way to save money but you also save time and declutter your home. I decided this is a good of time as ever to really simplify my life, why not give it a shot?

While I was researching the lifestyle I stumbled across a capsule wardrobe. Basically it's a wardrobe with no more than about 33 of your favorite pieces including shoes and accessories. That part scared me, 33 pieces? Really? But I figured if I'm serious about it I have to commit. If that means sacrificing my precious wardrobe so be it. I did, however, look at a few other websites that showed me different ways to do build a capsule wardrobe that weren't as strict. The basic principle is to not have more than 50 items in your wardrobe.  If you're interested in building a capsule wardrobe as well as simplifying it please read on.

Ok..  First things first.  Choose your favorite pieces. These are the pieces you actually wear, not like, but wear on average. Include things from all seasons if it's in your closet. I tried to get 3 or 4 of everything. For example I love black pants so I have a basic pair, a statement pair as well as a dressy pair. That's a good way to make sure you have all occasions covered in each section of your wardrobe. If you have to dig in the laundry just so every piece is accounted for so be it just remember to put it back in there.

Now that you've gotten your favorite pieces out. Start creating some outfits from your wardrobe choose matching pieces that pair well with your favorites. Remember that these aren't just things that "go" together these are outfits that you're going to actually wear on a regular basis.  Also include things that you're going to wear in the different seasons. So don't forget jackets, sweaters, and boots, things of that nature. Make sure you notice the color scheme that's forming. DON'T FORGET YOUR SHOES!

Anything thing left in your wardrobe? Yes? Good. Take it all out(yes all of it) and put your "new" wardrobe in your closet. With your old wardrobe separate it into three piles; sell, donate, and trash. The sell pile are the gently used items or items you never wore that you can sell to a used clothing store. Donate, of course is for the goodwill pile or clothes you can give to friends, and trash are for the clothes with stains rips and tears on them that you can't wear out also things that don't fit you well.

  • If you did pull out some winter clothes simply store them away in a spare closet til winter and just cycle them out. For example replacing your spring/summer jacket for your winter coats.

And that's it! That's how I created my capsule wardrobe. At first when I looked at my wardrobe I was a bit unsettled. It was so empty, everything was gone. However, after a few days I started to like it. I know what's in my wardrobe and I don't have to dig through to find anything. It's simple and stream lined also I do like the "bare"  look also I love how at home I feel in my closet now, and I don't feel like I have to wear everything.

My wardrobe is what I wanted it to be and all I had to do was clean it out.I just want to put in a sidebar, a capsule wardrobe is only supposed to be for 3 months just to see how you adapt to it. I'm giving and selling my clothes because I'm also trying to be less materialistic and it's good to start with the things you buy the most. If you're not it for a real life change just to try it out, then just put some clothes in storage and when the 3 months is over.Would you guys try a capsule wardrobe.
